The American Girl doll brand has come under extreme public backlash for a book that “encourages young girls to explore their identity” and offers information “about transitioning,” as reported by TMZ.

According to Fox Business, the novel “advises children struggling with body image” to ask their doctors for “puberty-blocking medications” if they feel unsure about their gender but are not yet ready to make a permanent change. In addition, the novel encourages children to seek transgender support from trusted “organizations across the country” — even if they have to do so without parental consent.
Despite the backlash, the company has doubled down on its decision to release the novel, titled A Smart Girl’s Guide: Body Image Book.

The Book
The subtitle of the 96-page book, intended for children age 10 and older, reads, “how to love yourself, live life to the fullest, and celebrate all kinds of bodies.” According to the American Girl website, the book includes “activities, tips, crafts, and real-girl stories.” The description reads that the novel is a “feel-good reminder that all bodies are worthy of love and respect.”
However, many parents have come to feel otherwise, calling the book “deceptive” and “dangerous,” as reported by the Daily Mail. According to the outlet, a passage in the book reads:
If you haven’t gone through puberty yet, the doctor might offer medicine to delay your body’s changes, giving you more time to think about your gender identity.
Another:
Parts of your body may make you feel uncomfortable and you may want to change the way you look. That’s totally OK! You can appreciate your body for everything it allows you to experience and still want to change certain things about it.
Parental Reactions
Parents have wasted no time sharing their thoughts on the body image book. Many have taken to Instagram, leaving comments on the brand’s recent posts.
You’ve gone from telling girls to love and care for their bodies to telling them they might need puberty blockers if they don’t like themselves. This is a deadly message, and you deserve every single bit of backlash you’re getting and then some.
