We all know one thing is for sure, what ever Nicki Minaj touches she dominates, and she definitely dominated the cover of Billboard for its “No.1s” issue! Even though it may seem as though Nicki might be going through it over her brother’s recent legal issue, she definitely has shown that love does conquer all as she sat down for a candid interview with Billboard talking about her boo Meek Mill.
She spills that she has recently moved into a home with Meek Mill in LA where the two have been spending some time with hip hop royals Jay-Z and Beyoncé, who also recently moved to LA from NYC. Nicki says that she and Meek “just feel happier”. They really look up to Jay and Bey as a couple and regardless of whether or not their relationship stands as long as theirs, Nicki is just concerned with living in the now, because it just feels so damn good!
“I don’t know what’s going to happen with he and I. I just know right now we are really, really enjoying each other’s company. So, shout out to everybody in the world that’s just trying to find love or be happy. Everybody should have someone to hold at night. It really, really changes your energy. I find that my energy is very different afterward — if I’m in the bed with him, just hugging him all day. It’s just, like, something about love. You transfer it. It’s infectious.”
Perhaps that infectiousness has rubbed of on her career, because Queen Nicki has had quite an amazing year! Her #1 album The Pinkprint topped the Billboard Rap Album charts for 4 weeks this year with #1 singles, Truffle Butter and Only which just went 3x platinum this week! What a great birthday present to her, right? Speaking of birthdays, Nicki has been sporting a gorgeous heart-shaped diamond ring since earlier this year and we all thought that she was engaged! Thankfully, she cleared it all up for Billboard.
“He and I are not engaged. But he said he would like to give me three rings before we get married. My birthday’s coming up, and he better get the new one, because he got [the first one] for my last birthday. So let’s see what happens.” Well, she’s got two rings now, because she was just gifted another huge rock from her boo, Meek Mill, for her birthday yesterday. Maybe we’ll see wedding bells this time next year!
Now, you know Billboard could not let Nicki go without getting her opinion on Barack Obama as his presidency is coming to a close. In particular, she appreciated how he took the time to visit people in prisons who were there for petty drug crimes. “I thought it was so important when he went to prisons and spoke to people who got 20 and 30 and 40 and 50 years for drugs. There are women who are raped, people who are killed and [offenders] don’t even serve 20 years. I think about how many men may have made a mistake to feed their families and then had to pay for it forever.” In her eyes, the war on drugs has become a new form of slavery, which makes sense if you really think about it! Why else would our government be nonchalant about excessive sentences unless they were making money from them?
As for whether or not she’s for Hillary or Donald, she says she supports Hillary, in part, because she identifies with her struggles as a woman, but she doesn’t have her vote just yet. “Am I convinced that she should be the next president? I still want to be open-minded about everyone. Obviously, I identify with her struggles as a woman. I identify with the fact that when she’s in that room and there are nothing but men there — there’s sometimes something in her that must feel intimidated. But I think that she uses that and turns it into a strength. Because that’s what I’ve always done.”
Yes, Nicki has managed to dominate a male-driven industry thanks to her grind and she never wants anyone to forget that!
“I have to set an example for female rappers. I’m at the top of that food chain, and it’s important to lead by example. And because I came into the game doing mixtapes, I want to make sure women do not forget the importance of that grind, that walk up to the top. You can’t get there with a song. Because once that song is no longer hot, you’re no longer hot. It’s important that you are bigger than your music. Some fans are going to f— with me for the rest of my life because they know where I came from. Fans know my struggle. How hungry I was. That I was not settling, I was not giving up. I was on everybody’s beat. I was ruthless.”
