Back in 2007, Kevin Morton was closing up an Arby’s after his shift when he was shot in the stomach and left to fight for his survival. As he began to heal, Morton reevaluated his life and set himself on a new path where he eventually decided that he would go to school to be some a doctor! He was inspired by Dr. Dharti Sheth-Zelmanski who had saved his life that fateful night nine years ago.
“The compassion and drive that Dr. Sheth has shown in trying to save my life … I just wanna pay that forward,” Morton told NBC News. He is now 31 and graduated from Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine last week! This week, Morton is actually set to begin his residency at the same exact hospital that he was admitted to, alongside Dr. Dharti Sheth-Zelmanski.
We knew he wasn’t going to give up,” Sheth-Zelmanski told NBC News. “We weren’t gonna give up — so we had to make it happen.” Now this child is a doctor and has a wife and a young daughter to make proud.
