In a heartbreaking revelation, Claude McKnight, brother of R&B singer Brian McKnight, announced the passing of his nephew, Nikolas “Niko” McKnight, 32, who had been courageously battling cancer for approximately two years. Though his announcement was posted on May 29, the date Niko passed away has not been confirmed, as of yet. Claude shared the news in a TikTok video, expressing his sorrow:
“This morning, I found out that my nephew, Niko McKnight, passed away. He’d been bravely battling cancer for the past two years or so,” Claude said. He continued, “Niko was one of those amazing kids who was quirky, and curious, and ridiculously talented. Amazing singer and amazing guitar player. Had a great eye as a photographer. And just one of those kids that, at least in my estimation…that you always wanted to be around.”

Niko, a musician and aspiring artist, had previously made headlines due to his strained relationship with his father, Brian. In January 2024, Niko announced on Instagram that he was diagnosed with cancer and that “things were looking better.” Furthermore, shortly after, it was alleged that Brian distanced himself during Niko’s health crisis but publicly acknowledged his stepchildren and his youngest son, Brian Kainoa Makoa Jr, whom he shares with Leilani Malia Mendoza. Niko also accused Brian of past misconduct, including forging signatures and making disparaging remarks about him and his siblings.
Despite these tensions, Niko seemingly continued to receive support from other family members. Additionally, this included his mother, Julie McKnight.
