Hélio Hermito Zampier Neto, a surviving member of the Chapecoense soccer team that was involved in the November 28th plane crash, recently awoke from a coma this past weekend with no memory of what happened.
According to ABC News, the team’s doctor, Edson Stakonski, said that upon regaining consciousness, Neto asked about the outcome of the soccer tournament and why he was unable to play in the game.
Alan Ruschel and Jackson Follmann, two additional surviving team members have headed back to Brazil. However, Neto’s condition prevented him from leaving the San Vicente Foundation Hospital.
Doctors and psychologist have made the decision to keep the information of the crash from Neto until he is in a more stable condition.
There is currently an investigation on the crash underway. A Colombian official with Civil Defense of Medellin said that the planes tail seemed to have clipped the top of a mountain and broke as it approached José María Córdova International Airport in Rionegro.
A member of the Colombia’s civil aviation authority also confirmed that the aircraft only had enough fuel for their destination, which means they did not have enough in case of an emergency.
Last week Atletico Nacional, the Chapecoense soccer teams opponents in the tournament declared that the team be awarded the winning title.
The crash claimed the lives of 71 people, and 19 of those people were Neto’s teammates.
