Margarita Mix-Up? Here’s What Went Down At A North Carolina Chili’s
The Foothills Health District shared preliminary details about the situation, explaining that a contracted worker who was power washing the restaurant’s exterior gave an employee a “granulated degreasing chemical” on Monday, October 26. The employee reportedly placed the chemical in a unlabeled container before bringing it inside the restaurant and allegedly leaving it near the bar.
Two days later, on Wednesday, October 28, another employee came across the container while preparing the bar for lunch service. Mistaking the chemical for sugar, the worker reportedly used it to make margaritas. Shortly after ordering the drinks, three customer experienced immediate discomfort and suffered chemical burns in and around their mouths. The customers alerted the staff about their symptoms before leaving to seek medical attention. Two Chili’s employees then tasted the substance themselves and experienced similar symptoms. Foothills Health District spokesperson Megan Rollins confirmed that the customers sought treatment at an urgent care facility. However, she said she wasn’t sure about the severity of the burns.
