A Manhattan chiropractor and his wife jumped to their deaths on Friday.
According to the New York Post, Glenn Scarpelli, 53, and Patricia Colant, 50, left behind suicide notes that reportedly said they “cannot live with” their “financial reality.”
The couple jumped around 5:45 a.m. from the ninth floor of a Madison Avenue building where they worked. The night before they carried out trash bags filled with belongings from their home and placed them on the curb.
The couple’s bodies were found in the middle of East 33rd Street in Murray Hill. In their pockets were suicide notes and ID’s that were placed in plastic baggies. According to a source, Scarpelli reportedly titled his note, “WE HAD A WONDERFUL LIFE.’’
In the note, it continued, “Patricia and I had everything in life,” however the note went on to describe the financial trouble that the couple faced.”
Reports showed that the couple was engulfed in debt and were hit with dozens of tax liens from both the federal and state government.
The couple leaves behind two children, a son that is 19-years-old and a daughter who is 20-years-old.
Adam Lamb, a fellow chiropractor, who knew the couple for about 16 years said, “I just don’t understand why this would happen, why they would do this to their kids.”
A lawyer that represents the family said in a statement that they are “distraught,” and asked that the family gets privacy as they deal with this tragedy and gather more information.
