It has been almost one week since the tragic passing of Nipsey Hussle, and the news still feels surreal. Celebrities, communities, family members and fans have all spoken out about Nipsey’s legacy and the impact he had on the world.
In her first interview since his passing, Nipsey’s grandmother, Margaret Boutte, told CBSLA that despite the hurt she feels, she has found peace in the support from the Los Angeles community.
“I never knew there was so much love like I love him,” she said. “So that’s uplifting that so many people loved and understood him.
Boutte expressed that Nipsey’s legacy and impact on the youth is what she feels is most important, and she hopes young people will take heed to his messages of love, unity, and respect.
“I hope these young people will get the message and live a better life–there’s more to life.”
Boutte helped raise Nipsey, and had a great impact on his life. He spoke about her in a prior interview with CBS2 before the Grammy’s.
“I was raised by my mom and grandma,” he said. “She was real big on keeping a tight family and very big on love.”
Sadly, Boutte recounts Sunday’s events, as she was home with Nipsey’s brother Samiel when they got the call that he had been shot.
“Sammy got up there soon enough to start helping his brother. Erias knew Sammy was there before he died,” Boutte said.
Despite losing her grandson, Boutte says she wants to stay positive, continue to move in love and offers up prayers for Nipsey’s killer.
“I’m praying for him too. I hope he does not get killed in custody and has enough time to ask God for forgiveness,” she said. “I’m Catholic, I do believe in prayer and I’m praying for him. He was a young man in an ignorant situation and I’m hoping he’s sorry for what he did.”
Nipsey’s family is preparing for a large memorial that will accommodate thousands of people to join in celebrating his life. They will host a private service as well.
