Just when it seemed like President Trump was going to come through and increase the stimulus payments for Americans, it appears the House Republicans have rejected his request to increase the stimulus payments to $2,000. Yesterday, we reported that President Trump was unhappy with the amount. He shared a video on Twitter where he said, “I’m asking Congress to amend this bill and increase the ridiculously low $600 to $2,000 or $4,000 for a couple.”
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi promptly responded to Trump on Twitter in agreement by tweeting, “Republicans repeatedly refused to say what amount the President wanted for direct checks. At last, the President has agreed to $2,000 — Democrats are ready to bring this to the Floor this week by unanimous consent. Let’s do it!”
Today House Republicans, unfortunately, failed to advance a measure that would increase direct payments to Americans under a certain income level to $2,000, according to reports from CNN. The House Democrats attempted to pass the bill by a unanimous consent request quickly, but Republicans rejected the move. The rejection leaves the future of the $900 billion stimulus package unknown. The stimulus package was attached to a spending bill for the entire federal government, and a deadline for government funding expires Monday at midnight.
Nancy announced that Democrats will now move to pass the bill on the floor with a full up-or-down vote on December 28th. She said in a statement, “Hopefully by then the President will have already signed the bipartisan and bicameral legislation to keep the government open and to deliver coronavirus relief.”
