Roommates, things got a bit heated following closing arguments in the courtroom today during DAY 16 of the Derek Chauvin murder trial. When Judge Cahill denied the defense’s request to declare a mistrial due to recent comments from Rep. Maxine Waters, he openly took her to task for suggesting that protestors take further action if Derek Chauvin is acquitted.
However, Judge Cahill made it very clear that he was not happy with her and stated that he “wished elected officials would stop talking about the case.” He further chastised Rep. Waters by calling her comments “abhorrent” and “disrespectful.” The comments he’s referring to occurred over the weekend when Maxine Waters said that if Derek Chauvin is found not guilty, protesters should “stay on the street” and “get more confrontational.”

Following Waters’ comments, several Republicans immediately claimed that she was inciting violence with her remarks. Although, she explained her comments, saying:
“We’ve got to stay in the street and demand justice. We’re looking for a guilty verdict and we’re looking to see if all of the talk that took place and has been taking place after they saw what happened to George Floyd. If nothing does not happen, then we know that we got to not only stay in the street, but we have got to fight for justice.”
Maxine Waters visited Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, to support local protesters and the family of Daunte Wright, who was recently killed by former police officer Kim Potter—who has since been charged with manslaughter for his death.
Derek Chauvin’s defense team initially requested the mistrial over issues with recent publicity that the high-profile murder trial is attracting, including on television shows. Defense attorney Eric Nelson complained that the trial was featured in two TV shows and Waters’ “threats” against the sanctity of the jury process.
