Social media has been buzzing about the recent spike in police brutality reports in the African American community but now another issue has come to threaten black lives in the LA streets.
A new hashtag called #100Days100Nights on Instagram and Twitter seriously has the citizens of South Central, LA concerned since it makes the area seem as though it is going through today’s Purge script.
Apparently, the hashtag stands for a challenge between two rival gangs to see who can kill 100 people first or atleast who can kill the most before the 100 days are up. The challenge spans from Western to Normandie avenues and it just started last week.
Unfortunately, the hashtag was allegedly created out of revenge for the death of 27-year-old, single parent, Kenneth Peevy aka KP. According to reports, he was shot in the torso and was dead before police arrived. Many believed it was gang related since he was allegedly a member of a local street gang called Rollin 100s.
“It’s just gonna put them in the same situation: You either are going to die behind this or go to jail behind this,” a family member told the Daily Beast. “It’s not gonna make a difference, it’s just making it worse.”
The validity of the threat has yet to be determined since there is heavy speculation on if it is actually real or who started it and why but there is no denying that random people are dieing at the hands of gun violence in the area.
A 4-year-old boy was the one of the first to be killed under the alleged challenge. A woman and two boys, 4 and 11, were innocently sitting in their car when a man walked up on them and sprayed bullets into the car. All in all reportedly there have been more than three dozen shooting incidents reported and 10+ people have been killed in the span of just a weekend.
The LAPD have a different perspective on the situation. They don’t believe that there is an immediate threat since there is no evidence to show that the shootings are directly linked.
“You’ve got everyday folks who have nothing to do with the gang lifestyle and culture scared,” Deputy Chief Bill Scott told the LA Times in hopes of keep people in the area calm.
