Jada Pinkett Smith hasn’t given the public a detailed opinion of Will Smith’s decision to slap Chris Rock in her defense. Although she addressed the Oscars incident in the latest Red Table Talk, those details still didn’t come. Instead, she expressed her “deepest hope” for Will and Chris to heal, talk and reconcile. Former co-star and peer to Jada and Will, Vivica A. Fox called Jada out for having “no accountability” in her “self-righteous” response to the altercation.
Vivica said Jada’s comment on the episode about the men bridging this gap between them made her cry. She seemingly called out Jada’s lack of good partnership.
“I felt to be a good partner; there was no accountability,” Vivica said. “Will Smith was defending her honor; that was the reason he walked on stage and slapped because he felt like his wife had been offended. So, for me to see no accountability as a partner…also let’s not forget that Chris Rock was assaulted, we cannot forget that…for basically telling a joke that I really felt wasn’t that bad.”
The actress also dove into who else lost that night due to the altercation. She named hit Hollywood producer Will Packer, who made history that night by leading the first all-Black team to produce the Oscars.
“This night was a night of African-American and diversity for brown and Black people that now will forever be scarred,” Vivica added.
Jada Says She Hopes Will And Chris Can Reconcile
Jada stirred social media with her take-a-deep-breath kind of response to the award show drama between her husband and the comedian. Will took to the Oscars stage on March 27 during live broadcasting. It was moments after Chris told a joke about Jada’s bald look–suggesting she could play G.I. Jane. Prior to the show, Jada had openly spoken about alopecia affecting her hair growth.
He walked up to Chris and landed an open-palm slap on his face. Will then turned around and returned to the seat as the crowd whispered and searched for hints of a joke. Instead, they got Will’s shouts across the room at Chris, warning him to keep Jada’s name out of his mouth.
The moment flooded the news cycle for weeks, including the Academy’s decision to ban Will from the show for a decade, his apology, and Chris’ refusal to talk as his brothers raved about revenge.
But in Wednesday’s episode Jada didn’t mention the eye roll she gave Chris after the joke, the consequences Will faced or the weeks it took her to speak on the incident again. She stuck to her show’s theme of healing and conversations.
“Now about Oscar night, my deepest hope is that these two intelligent, capable men have the opportunity to heal, talk this out and reconcile. The state of the world today, we need them both,” Jada said. “And we all actually need one another more than ever. Until then, Will and I are continuing to do what we have done for the last 28 years, and that’s figuring out this thing called life together. Thank you for listening.”
And that’s the answer Vivica shared didn’t sit right with her. Despite having love for the couple and knowing their children, Vivica expressed wanting that accountability from them. Instead, Jada gave her the opposite.
“I just wish we could have just a little more accountability and for it not to seem so self-righteous on Jada’s part and that’s my feelings,” she said.
