As Pride month is just beginning, a Texas lawmaker announced a proposed legislation that would ban minors from attending drag shows in the state. According to NBC News, Republican State Rep. Bryan Slaton said the law was necessary to protect children from “perverted adults.” While it may seem like this is coming out of nowhere, reports show this is in response to a viral video of children attending a drag show in Dallas on Saturday.
The event, “Drag the Kids to Pride Drag Show,” was held at the Mr. Misster bar. The event was advertised as a family-friendly spin-off of the bar’s “Champagne Drag Brunch” show. In a press release shared on Twitter, Rep Slaton wrote, “The events of this past weekend were horrifying and show a disturbing trend in which perverted adults are obsessed with sexualizing young children. As a father of two young children, I would never take my children to a drag show, and I know speaker Dade Phelan and the rest of my Republican colleagues wouldn’t either.”

He added, “Protecting our own children isn’t enough, and our responsibility as lawmakers extends to the sexualization that is happening across Texas.” The news has other Republican lawmakers voicing their opinions as well. Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene of Georgia also spoke out on the matter. Rep. Greene tweeted, “It should be illegal to take children into Drag Queen shows and strip clubs. And there should be no federal funding for any school that intentionally confuses children about gender/sexuality.”
The tweet ended by saying, any teacher or school employee caught doing so should be fired and lose all benefits. Roommates, do you think the law should go into effect?
