A week after she was formally sentenced to 20 years in prison for her participation in the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking ring, Ghislaine Maxwell has officially filed an appeal through her legal team. Not only is she appealing her recent two-decade sentence, but Ghislaine Maxwell is also appealing her initial conviction and all fines she was ordered to pay.
According to new court documents filed via her attorneys in the Southern District of New York, Ghislaine Maxwell is hoping to be released from prison by filing an appeal. @Forbes reports, Maxwell is appealing her conviction, her 20-year sentence, and the $750,000 fine she is required to pay. Her appeal shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as her legal team previously stated that it was in the works. The appeal has since been directed to the U.S. Court of Appeals based on new records from the court docket.
Interestingly, the appeal did not include why Ghislaine Maxwell should have her sentence and conviction overturned, however it may have something to do with what she previously stated in court. During her trial, Maxwell said she believed the trial should have been thrown out due to one of the jurors being a sexual abuse victim and failing to report that information on the pre-trial forms.
Additionally, via her attorneys, Maxwell also argued that some of Jeffrey Epstein’s victims were above the age of consent in a few of the states where the sex trafficking and abuse took place.
As we previously reported, Ghislaine Maxwell continues to maintain that she never abused any of the victims and stated that she hoped her conviction and “unusual incarceration” brought some “measure of peace and finality.”
