A Georgia Couple Is Sentenced To Time In Prison After Using Racial Threats At A Child’s Birthday Party In 2015

On Monday a Georgia couple was sentenced to time in prison following their involvement in using racial threats towards a group of party-goers back in 2015.

According to WSB-TV, a Douglas County judge sentenced defendants Jose Torres to serve 13-years and Kayla Norton to serve 6 years. The couple who have three children together were reportedly a part of a group called “Respect The Flag” back in July 2015.

Back then the group pulled up to the birthday party of an African American 8-year old with the Confederate flag flying from the back of their pickup trucks.

According to Melissa Alford, a woman who was at the 2015 birthday party, seven pickup trucks displaying the Confederate flag pulled up to the property where the party was held. They were reportedly armed and threatened to, “kill y’all [N-words].”

Douglas County District Attorney Brian Fortner said in a statement, “This is behavior that even supporters of the Confederate battle flag can agree is criminal and shouldn’t be allowed.”

Superior Court Judge William McClain added, “Their actions were motivated by racial hatred.”

Both defendants were teary eyed as they were sentenced. Torres was sentenced on three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of terroristic threats and one count of violating the street gang act. Norton was sentenced on one count of violating Georgia’s street gang act and one count of making terroristic threats.

Back in October 2015 15 other members from the “Respect The Flag” group were charged with violations of Georgia’s Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act and Terroristic Threats.
