A New Record Breaking Number Of 6.6 Million People File For Unemployment Amid The Coronavirus Pandemic (Update)

As we make our way through another week dealing with this pandemic, more Americans have filed for unemployment, producing yet another record-breaking number of unemployment claims.

According to ABC News, on Thursday the U.S. Department of Labor released the data showing the amount of Americans that have filed for unemployment, and the number has now risen to 6,648,000.

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only raised health concerns as each day goes by, but also financial concerns as many businesses that are not identified as essential remain closed. Cities across the country continue to enforce that everyone continues to socially distance themselves, and some cities are ordering residents to shelter in place with hopes of stopping the virus from spreading.

The Department of Labor’s data shows that the service industry, followed by accommodation and food services were the most affected by the pandemic. Health care/social assistance, manufacturing, retail, and construction, are other industries that have been heavily impacted as well.

As we previously reported, last week, the first round showed that around 3.28 million people had filed for unemployment claims. This week, more than 3 million more people have filed, beating last week’s record.
