A New York Mom Becomes The Latest Reported Fatality In Dominican Republic

Roommates, the Dominican Republic may not be the hottest touring destination, after the island claims its 11th life in the last month.

According to New York Post, 38-year-old Donette Edge Cannon of Queens, N.Y. was vacationing in D.R. with her family. They were all set to spend five days at Punta Cana resort, but Donette did not make it.

The group told The Post they had experienced minor stomach issues over the course of the trip, but were not concerned for their well being, until day five.

“For us, throughout the trip, we kept using the bathroom,” Donette’s sister, Candace, said. “We went to a restaurant in the same condition, anytime we ate we were using the bathroom.”

On the final night of the trip, the group reportedly went to dinner, then went dancing and ultimately headed back to their rooms. But in the middle of the night, Donette reportedly woke up with stomach pains, began to vomit and experienced diarrhea.

When her condition seemed to be worsening, the family decided to call a doctor.

“My cousin said, ‘It’s getting worse. I’m going to have the medics come and check her out,” Candace recalled. “Once they got to the room, she fell unconscious and they took her to the hospital.”

Once the family arrived at the hospital, they made emergency responders aware that Donette did have diabetes, but had never suffered sickness such as this. Some hours later, Donette passed away due to kidney failure.

“Their conclusion was renal failure, but it never addressed what initially got her sick in the first place,” Candace said.

After recent reports of other fatal tourist visits to the island, the family is now concerned Donette was a victim of something bigger.

“I think now that looking at the other incidents that it is definitely something deeper and shed light on their healthcare practices,” Candace told The Post.

The family has reportedly vowed they would never return to the country, and urges others to be cautious about traveling.
