Recently Nate Parker has been making headlines after his 1999 rape case resurfaced, which has made viewers question if they wanted to support his upcoming film “The Birth Of A Nation.”
If you all can remember earlier this year the film, which is about Nat Turner’s slave rebellion, received raved reviews at Sundance and was sold for a record breaking $17 million. However, since Parker’s rape case has been brought back to light, the film has been suffering prior to its release in October.
According to TMZ, Academy President, Cheryl Boone Isaacs is till encouraging viewers to go see the film despite Parker’s past. She said, “I know just by the conversation that has gone on at Sundance that it’s clearly a movie that filmgoers should go and see.”
She continued, “That’s one issue, that’s his personal issue. And then there’s the issue of the movie. The important thing is for people to see it and enjoy the film, be impressed by the film. And I think that is what is very important. People need to see this movie.”
Although he was acquitted during the case, a screening of the film has been cancelled at the American Film Institute. And the Toronto International Film Festival announced that the film would not be a part of their press conferences.
