Amara La Negra Defends Gina Rodriguez Saying The N-Word: "She Was Reciting A Song"

Amara La Negra Defends Gina Rodriguez Saying The N-Word: “She Was Reciting A Song”

Gina Rodriguez has sparked a host of debates surrounding the n-word, after she uploaded a video of herself singing Fugees lyrics that contained the word. Many black social media users have expressed how “wrong” it is for a person who is not black to say the word, but Amara La Negra feels differently.

As an afro-latina, Amara considers herself as a person of color, and a black woman, and admits she uses the n-word herself. She, however, feels Gina Rodriguez has the right to say the word just as much as the next person singing along to their favorite song.

Amara tells TMZ that the word should not be used as much as it is, given that it has such a negative connotation.

“She was reciting a song,” Amara says in regard to Gina. “If people feel so sensitive about the word, it shouldn’t be used in so many songs. It’s not like she was talking to someone or being confrontational. I don’t think she meant it in a harmful way.”

Amara adds that she and Gina are both Latina, but as a woman with darker skin, she has been getting a pass to say the word. She acknowledges that Gina should have known better than to post a clip of herself using the word, but doubles down on her argument that it’s “just a song”.

Amara also brings up a very interesting point, saying that a lot of Latinos are raised in neighborhoods alongside African-Americans. She says they are used to hearing and using the word, and doesn’t see an issue as long as they aren’t being malicious.

As we previously reported, Gina  not only issues an apology to anybody she may have offended, she also issued a statement in regards to her action. The statement includes a written apology, and gina expresses regret for “letting the community of color down.”
