Anika Noni Rose & Kerry Washington Express Their Interest In Doing Voice Work As Animators Seek More Black Voices For Black Characters

As many of you know the recent climate of the world has brought about a change in many different industries. As many start to show their allyship for the Black Lives Matter movement, changes are being made left and right to show improvement.

Recently a few Caucasian voice actors have decided to step away from the Black characters that they have voiced because they are now realizing Black people should be the ones voicing these Black characters.

Two well-known actresses have publicly expressed their interest in voicing some of these characters.

As we previously reported, Mike Henry, who has voiced Cleveland Brown on the popular animated show, “Family Guy,” for the past 20 years, announced last week he would be stepping down from the role, as he expressed that he feels that the role should now be fulfilled by a person of color.

The following day, producers for the hit show “The Simpsons” announced that they would no longer allow white actors to voice characters of color.

On Monday, Anika Noni Rose took to Twitter and said, “Apparently animators and cartoonists are looking for Black voices? May I just say…hiyeeee! One of my favorite things to do!”

She added, “I also specialize in kids and creatures.…cuz they’re fun!”

As many of you know, Anika is the voice of Disney’s first black princess, Princess Tiana, from “The Princess and the Frog,” which released back in 2009.

Kerry Washington also shared her interest in wanting to do voice work and said, “Dear animators looking for black voices… I’m avail.”
