#Roommates, following the intense rioting and looting that recently occurred in the city of Atlanta a curfew was enacted—and residents might not be happy to learn that they might be dealing with it for longer than they expected. It has just been announced that the Atlanta curfew has officially been extended through June 7th and could possibly go longer than that, as Atlanta officials are doing everything they can to avoid a repeat of recent rioting and looting.
According to @AJC, Atlanta officials have just extended the citywide curfew for the fifth consecutive night and leading all the way up through Sunday, June 7th. The curfew goes into effect once again at 9PM on June 3rd and June 4th—while on June 5th, June 6th and June 7th the curfews begin at 8PM, expiring at sunrise each day. The only exceptions to the curfews apply to those seeking medical help, working, first responders and the homeless, the city said in a press release on social media.
The curfew restrictions were an initial response intended to curb destruction of the city as Atlanta, like several other cities across the country, continues to deal with civil unrest over recent incidents of police brutality stemming from the murder of George Floyd. To date, Atlanta police have arrested at least 350 people since demonstrations began late last week.
For the last several days, demonstrators have gathered daily to protest the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, while in Minneapolis police custody. The protests have initially started peacefully in several instances, but turned violent including intense encounters with police and the looting of businesses.
As we previously reported, Atlanta police and members of the Georgia National Guard were deployed in the city using tactics such as tear gassing to attempt to disperse the crowds.
