Senator Bernie Sanders is definitely making his mark in the presidential race. The senator has received praises from minorities across the country, and has garnered the support of many famous African American celebrities, more than any other running presidential candidate and there’s a reason why he’s taking a stand for Black communities across the nation!
Sanders, who is now 74 years old, was once a prominent activist back in his younger years, when he attended the University Of Chicago, according to Chicago Tribune. An old pic of Sanders in action was found in the media platforms archives by photo-editor, Marianna Mather, which shows Sanders being dragged by police officers, arrested and fined there after for $25!
Sanders was apart of the movement to end segregation between Blacks and Whites attending schools, as the Black students were attending classroom sessions in mobile classrooms titled, “Willis Wagons,” named after the Superintendent Benjamin Willis by Rosie Simpson who noticed this dismay during that time.
Sanders coincidentally still carries his college i.d, and was able to identify himself in the photos the Chicago Tribune discovered. “Bernie identified it himself,” said Tad Devine, senior advisor to his campaign. “He looked at it…and he said, ‘Yes, that indeed is (me).’”
There is also a photo of Sanders in 1962 talking to students on campus during a sit-in in 1962!
“His activism and whine occurred, as a young college student, set in motion the direction of his life,” said Devine.
The photos of Sanders taken during his civil rights activists days, were taken in August 1963 near South 73rd Street and Lowe Avenue, located in Englewood neighborhood of Chicago.
