Black Love Classic ‘Love Jones’ Was Released In Theaters 25 Years Ago Today!

Roommates, there have been many Black Love films that occupy a very special place in our hearts due to the beautiful way they depict relationships within the Black community…but few have remained as well-loved as the 1997 classic ‘Love Jones!’

Starring Larenz Tate and Nia Long, ‘Love Jones’ was released in theaters 25 years ago today and fans still can’t get enough of the timeless love story. Featuring an unprecedented amount of chemistry between Larenz and Nia, together they tell the complicated story of Darius Lovehall and Nina Mosely—-whose relationship starts in the middle and takes multiple twists and turns until that final, iconic scene at the end.

The debut feature film from writer and director Theodore Witcher, ‘Love Jones was set in the sexy, cultural city of Chicago, centering around Larenz as charming poet Darius Lovehall and Nia as beautiful photographer Nina Mosely. Their relationship is equally as passionate as it is tumultuous, while portraying the type of relationship between a Black couple that had not been seen before on the big screen. There was no “struggle love” and no Black trauma—instead it featured two educated, cultured, sexy Black people who expressed their love in ways that forever defined an entire generation.
