#BlackHistoryToday: HAMPTON UNIVERSITY BECOMES FIRST HBCU IN DIVISION I LACROSSE

HBCU Hampton University is making history once again as the first historically black university to compete in Division I men’s lacrosse!

ESPN’s Sportscenter on the Road visited the Virginia campus Saturday morning and covered its pre-game celebration before they played Roberts Wesleyan College, their first Division I opponent. Hampton U’s Coach Lloyd Carter is very grateful for the achievement as he says to the Baltimore Sun, “These guys, they don’t see it yet. The reason I see it is because I was there … When I got older, I had a better appreciation of history. And that’s what I am selling these guys now. This is special because we are part of history again.”

Hampton’s team, according to Coach Carter, has guys who had never played lacrosse before college but is now improving itself and getting a lot of publicity. The program expanded to what it is now because of a student starting a club program at the university. When the student later died of heart complications, his mother continued to make the program happen.

Now, the team is getting calls from students wanting to play from all over the country. Kids wanting to play the sport as well as have an HBCU experience are reaching out to see what they can do and Coach Carter says he’s already gotten commits from players in Texas and Ohio.
