#BlackLivesMatter Nominated For 2021 Nobel Peace Prize For Its ‘Powerful Message Of Equality, Solidarity And Human Rights’

#Roommates, Black History Month is definitely starting off the right way with this inspiring news regarding the #BlackLivesMatter movement. It was recently announced that Black Lives Matter is one of the nominees for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for its groundbreaking work during the 2020 protests.

According to @NBCNews, the Black Lives Matter movement has received endless amounts of praise for its work following the death of George Floyd—and now the movement has been nominated for one of the highest honors in the world. Norwegian lawmaker Peter Eide, a Socialist Left member of Storting, Norway’s parliament, has nominated Black Lives Matter for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. In his nomination letter, Eide wrote that he nominated Black Lives Matter “for their struggle against racism and racially motivated violence. BLM’s call for systemic change have spread around the world, forcing other countries to grapple with racism within their own societies.”

Additionally, Eide also cited Black Lives Matter’s “online platform to provide activists with a shared set of principles and goals,” saying the grassroots movement “comprises many views and a broad array of demands.” He further detailed the important work of the movement he believes is more than worthy of a nomination.

“Awarding the Peace Prize to Black Lives Matter, as the global strongest force against racial injustice, will send a powerful message that peace is founded on equality, solidarity, and human rights, and that all countries must respect those basic principles,” he said. Eide added that Black Lives Matter will be “among the favorites” when the winner is announced in December.

You’ll recall that the Black Lives Matter movement initially began after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who murdered Trayvon Martin back in 2013—however the movement reached its peak last summer after the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers, led by Derek Chauvin.
