“Boondocks” Reboot On HBO’s New Streaming Service Gets 2-Season, 24-Episode Order

#Roommates, your prayers have been answered! After several long years of hoping, wishing and outright begging for the iconic animated series “The Boondocks” to return—it’s finally happening and it’s all thanks to HBO.

If you ever watched “The Boondocks” back in the day you already know just how brilliant it was at presenting satire on politics, race relations, pop culture and much more. Well, HBO is gearing up for the debut of its new streaming service HBO Max and they have decided to bring back Aaron McGruder’s animated classic. As reported by @shadow_act, HBO Max, which is WarnerMedia’s foray into the streaming game, has officially given “The Boondocks” a 2-season, 24-episode order to kick things off.

The good news doesn’t stop there though. All 55 episodes of the full series will also be available on HBO Max along with a 55-minute special. You’ll have to wait about a year to get your fix of the new “Boondocks” because it’s not set to premiere until fall 2020.

Aaron McGruder had this to say about why now is the perfect time to bring the series back:

“There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of ‘The Boondocks’ and do it over again for today. It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now – both politically and culturally – more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun.”

Kevin Reilly, COO of HBO Max and President of TBS, TNT and truTV, acknowledged just how groundbreaking the show was and how excited he is that it’s returning:

The Boondocks’ was a revolutionary series that sparked conversations on hot button issues and brought dark subjects into the light with episodes like ‘The Trial of Robert Kelly’, ‘The Fundraiser’ and ‘The Story of Gangstalicious’. Aaron is a gifted visionary whose unique style of storytelling is a welcome voice and we are elated The Freemans are making their thugnificent comeback on HBO Max.”

Now, we’re just waiting to find out if Regina King ad John Witherspoon will be reprising their roles in the series…fingers crossed!
