California Governor Gavin Newsom Signs New Bill Into Law Allowing Victims Of Gun Violence To Sue Firearm Manufacturers

As the nationwide crackdown on gun violence and gun reform continues, California Governor Gavin Newsom just made a major step benefitting residents of his state. Governor Newsom just signed a new bill into law in California that allows victims of gun violence to sue firearm manufacturers.

@CNN reports, earlier this week California Governor Gavin Newsom made a bold move regarding gun violence and gun reform that many residents are likely to approve of. The governor officially signed a new law that gives those who are victims of gun violence, the ability to file civil suits against the companies that manufacture the firearms used in violent crimes. This is the latest step towards stricter gun laws in the state of California, which you may recall, has the strictest gun safety measures in the country.

Speaking about signing the new law, Governor Newsom said via press release, “To the victims of gun violence and their families: California stands with you. The gun industry can no longer hide from the devastating harm their products cause.”

He continued adding remarks about the importance of holding gun manufacturers liable for gun violence in California. “Our kids, families and communities deserve streets free of gun violence and gun makers must be held accountable for their role in this crisis. Nearly every industry is held liable when people are hurt or killed by their products — guns should be no different,” Newsom said.

A previous federal law from 2005 protects gun manufacturers and dealers from lawsuits when the weapons they produce are used to commit crimes, however within the state of California, this is now being challenged following the new law Governor Newsom just signed.

Additionally, California recently allocated $156 million in gun violence prevention grants to support almost 80 cities and nonprofit organizations implementing anti-violence programs.
