One day in 2021, Brian Moore, a disabled veteran from Georgia, was headed to Los Angeles, California, from Atlanta to reportedly shoot a music video. However, Moore reportedly never made it past his gate. Instead, Moore was reportedly stopped as federal DEA agents seized $8,500 in cash that he was legally carrying. But apparently, Brian Moore isn’t the only one to face similar circumstances. Black travelers are reportedly sharing that they’ve had their cash confiscated under a program called “civil forfeiture.” But how is this happening, and why?

The Shade Room‘s Justin Carter is looking into things on ‘TSR Investigates.’

Here’s What Reportedly Happened To Brian Moore

According to Moore, the cash originated from a recent car sale. However, federal agents didn’t appear to care when they pulled him off the flight for a “random” search. Per Moore, the agents proceeded to tell him that he “looked suspicious.” Ultimately, the agents confiscated his cash and allegedly directed him to proceed onto his flight “like nothing had ever happened.”

Two years later, Moore won his case after taking the government to court. However, he didn’t stop there. Additionally, he asked the court to award him the $15,200 he spent on attorney fees. The court ultimately rejected his request, arguing that they asked for the case to be dismissed.

More On The Black Travelers Facing Civil Forfeiture

But Moore isn’t the only one to face “civil forfeiture.” Per senior attorney Dan Alban, he’s just part of the small percentage of people who try to fight to get their possessions back.

“The seizure of cash and other property are often not huge amounts of money, and so you would often spend more on an attorney than the amount of property that was seized,” he explained.

Scroll above to watch as Carter shares how Moore’s case ultimately took another expected turn. Additionally,  Carter breaks down the events that impacted other travelers who also faced civil forfeiture.
