Early Life
Tyler was born in 1969 in New Orleans, Louisiana, under the birth name Emmitt Perry Jr. He and his three siblings grew up under difficult circumstances as his father Emmitt Perry Sr. was a known abuser. Tyler also admitted to being sexually abused by four adults outside his difficult home life.
The abuse Tyler suffered drove him to attempt to commit suicide when he was just a teen. As an attempt to distance himself from this childhood of violence and his father, he changed his name to Tyler when he was 16.
When he was in his early 20s, Tyler decided to give writing a try in the hopes that it would help him deal with his past trauma.
Career
In the early 1990s, Tyler wrote the musical I Know I’ve Been Changed and performed it for the first time in Atlanta. Although the musical wasn’t a major success at first, after a few edits and rewrites, it reached success. He continued writing plays and musicals and performing them at venues such as House of Blues and Fox Theater.
In 2005, Tyler wrote his first movie Diary of a Mad Black Woman which was the beginning of his acting career. Perry has gone on to produce multiple films included Madea’s Family Reunion, Meet the Browns, Precious, and so much more. Over the coming years, he’s established himself as the king of entertainment, and there isn’t a person who doesn’t know his name.
