It is no doubt that Colin Kaepernick’s 2016 football season was memorable and historical as he made headlines after sitting and then kneeling during the national anthem.
His movement helped inspire other athletes both inside and outside of football to stand up for those who were facing daily injustices. Although Kaepernick remains a free agent, that does not mean his movement goes unnoticed.
According to USA Today, last year shortly after the National Museum of African American History and Culture was opened, sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards donated Kaepernick’s jersey and a few other items encouraging them to put it on display.
Edwards said, “I said,‘Don’t wait 50 years to try to get some memorabilia and so forth on Kaepernick. Let me give you a game jersey, some shoes, a picture …And it should be put right there alongside Muhammad Ali. He’s this generation’s, Ali.’ ”
The jersey is currently not on display, but Damion Thomas, the museum’s curator of sports said he expects new material to be placed into the exhibit within the next one to two years.
