Colorado Dad Who Was Kicked Off Flight For Being Too Sick While Trying To Leave The Dominican Republic Has Passed Away

A #Denver man has passed away after falling ill while vacationing in the #DominicanRepublic, his family said today.

#KhalidAdkins traveled to the DR with his daughter last week and he suddenly became sick while there, @fox31denver reports.

This past Sunday, when Adkins tried to fly back to the U.S., he was reportedly dripping in sweat and vomited in the plane’s bathroom, his sister-in-law Marla Strick told the station. He was then forced to get off the plane.

Adkins has been hospitalized since then in #SantoDomingo. “They transferred him to Santo Domingo and said that his breathing is really bad and that his kidneys were failing,” Strick said prior to Adkins’ death.

Doctors told the family at the time that they could try to find dialysis in Santo Domingo or take him to the U.S. for via helicopter ambulance.

Adkins’ daughter had already returned to Denver when her father got sick and his family members say they were having difficulty communicating with staff at the hospital, and were still unsure of a diagnosis as of Tuesday night.

“He said his leg started to swell and that’s why he couldn’t get up. And he started sweating and vomiting. He is just yelling and in pain, so he couldn’t talk to me,” Strick said.

An air ambulance flight to the U.S. costs an estimated $20,000.

At least 10 Americans have reportedly died after visiting the Caribbean country this year, Adkins would make 11.

Dominican government officials have said the number of deaths is not unusual and that they are isolated incidents.

Please keep Adkins’ family in your prayers and we will keep you posted on any related news.
