Tensions have been running high throughout the country, and a breaking point seemed to be reached after the recent incidents in Charlottesville, VA.
Baltimore, Maryland has made the initiative to remove four Confederate monuments from around the city.
According to ABC News, the statues that were removed overnight included, “the monument of Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas. J. “Stonewall” Jackson; the Confederate Women’s Monument; the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument; and the monument of Roger B. Taney, who wrote the 1856 Supreme Court ruling that denied citizenship to African Americans.”
The Associated Press reported that Baltimore Mayor, Catherine Pugh, suggested the statues should be removed and taken to Confederate cemeteries.
The process of removing the statues started Tuesday night around 11:30pm and was completed by Wednesday morning around 5:30am.
Pugh said “It’s done. They needed to come down. My concern is for the safety and security of our people. We moved as quickly as we could.”
The removal of the Confederate monuments comes after protesters in North Carolina snatched a statue down from a monument. There has been a demand to remove Confederate symbols in different cities throughout the country.
