A community in Broomfield, Colorado received a surprise on Saturday when pieces of a United Airlines plane started to fall from the sky.
According to ABC News, the FAA said in a statement that the Boeing 777-200 had to make an emergency landing at the Denver International Airport after experiencing engine failure. The flight was heading from Denver to Honolulu when an issue with the right engine occurred not too long after takeoff.
Videos and photos of the engine smoking started to flood social media, as well as videos and photos of parts of the engine that started to break off and fall into the front yards of people’s homes. Thankfully there were no injuries reported.
The airline said that there were a total of 231 passengers on the plane and 10 crew members. Luckily, everyone was rebooked on another flight to Honolulu.
David Delucia, a passenger that sat across the aisle from the failed engine said, “The plane started shaking violently, and we lost altitude and we started going down. When it initially happened, I thought we were done. I thought we were going down.”
Tyler Thal, a witness on the ground said, “While I was looking at it, I saw an explosion and then the cloud of smoke and some debris falling from it. It was just like a speck in the sky, and as I’m watching that, I’m telling my family what I just saw and then we heard the explosion. The plane just kind of continued on, and we didn’t see it after that.”
The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the incident.
