A Delta Air Lines flight from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam was hit by serious turbulence. In response, pilots diverted the plane to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, the airline said. Ultimately, 25 passengers went to the hospitals after suffering injuries from the turbulence. The incident marks the third widely reported plane incident in a week.

Passenger Describes Scene On Board

The severe turbulence reportedly One passenger said the turbulence threw people who weren’t wearing seat belts and drink carts around the cabin.

“They hit the ceiling, and then they fell to the ground,” Leann Clement-Nash told ABC News. “And the carts also hit the ceiling and fell to the ground and people were injured. It happened several times, so it was really scary.”

Another passenger named William Webster told CNN that he’s a frequent flyer, taking up to 80 flights a year. Still, he said Wednesday’s incident was “the craziest turbulence” he’s ever seen.

Webster claimed he was off his seat “for 30 seconds” despite being buckled in when the turbulence shook the Delta plane. Webster said passengers were screaming at their phones, and items were tossed in the air. He was able to hold on to his phone and an empty champagne glass.

“I watched a wine cart just get thrown into the air,” William Webster said. He did not suffer any injuries in the incident.

Serious injuries from in-flight turbulence are rare. However, scientists say they may be becoming more common as climate change alters the jet stream. A man died when a Singapore Airlines flight hit severe turbulence in May 2024. He was the first person to die from turbulence on a major airline in several decades.

More Details About the Delta Plane Incident Aftermath

The Delta Airbus A330-900, which had 270 people on board, including crew, landed around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday. The airport fire department and paramedics met the flight. Additionally, medical first responders transported 25 passengers to hospitals for evaluation and treatment. In a statement, Delta said, “We are grateful for the support of all emergency responders involved.” On Thursday, a Delta spokesperson told CNN that the majority of the passengers who got hospital treatment have since left.

Three Plane Incident In One Week

Just this week, The Shade Room has reported on two other plane-related incident. On Saturday (July 26), the separate incidents in the U.S. were on the opposite ends of severity. In California, officials revealed that three people died after a small plane crashed off the coast into the Pacific Ocean. In Denver, an American Airlines flight couldn’t takeoff  after a mechanical malfunction caused a fire and smoky cabin. 173 passengers had to evacuate.

Also, in June, an overseas plane incident rocked the global flight community, especially after one passenge survived. At least 240 people died in the Air India crash.
