Demi Lovato Says They “Rarely” Think About Drugs Four Years After Nearly Fatal Overdose

Demi Lovato’s journey through stardom has not been as easy one, as the Disney star turned pop star has battled drug addiction for years. After experiencing a nearly fatal overdose in 2018, Demi has been fighting to stay sober and recently revealed that eight months of sobriety is paying off.

I’m in such acceptance of my life the way that it is that I really rarely think about substances, which is a beautiful thing and something that I never thought would happen to me. And I realize that none of it works for me. What’s come into my life is acceptance.”

Demi talked about the journey on Boston radio station Mix 104.1, explaining that giving up drugs and alcohol was not something they initially wanted to do, which made the journey all the more difficult.

I had people around me that wanted me to be sober. I don’t think that I wanted it. And now, I made all the bargaining choices and I realized that none of it works for me.

Demi suffered an overdose in 2018, which nearly killed them. They suffered three strokes and a heart attack, but still chose to drink alcohol and smoke weed from time to time. Since then, Demi has chosen to go cold turkey, and created their most recent album completely sober.

After going through even more stuff last year, I came gout of treatment again and I realized, I really want to do this for myself and I want to make the best album possible, something that really represents who I am. The best way to do that and the easiest way to do something that most authentic is to do it clean and sober. I made this album clean and sober.”
