Roommates, Derek Chauvin made his first court appearance earlier today and his bail was increased from the previous amount of $500K to $1.25 million. During the court proceedings, his next appearance was also scheduled to take place at the end of the month.
Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is currently charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter for the heart-breaking death of George Floyd, made his very first appearance in court where he was granted bail. Appearing in Hennepin County court wearing an orange jumpsuit and blue surgical mask, Chauvin heard his new bail terms via the prison video conferencing system.
Judge Jeannice Reding granted the prosecution’s request for a $1.25 million unconditional bail or a lower bail of $1 million with conditions. The $1 million bail conditions would require Derek Chauvin to turn in his firearms and gun permits, have no contact with Floyd’s family, and not work in a security capacity or as an officer while out on bail.
Chauvin’s attorney, Eric Nelson, did not object to the requirements and asked for a hearing to be set for June 29th. As of right now, Derek Chauvin still has yet to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty, although experts say that it could happen at his next court appearance.
As we previously reported, the three other officers in the case were charged with aiding and abetting Chauvin and were granted bail last week.
