Roommates, I know you have been getting your life watching all the classic movies and animation films on the Disney Plus app. It’s been coming in clutch during the pandemic. There will be a small change on the platform given the sensitivity the world faces around race. Disney has decided to update its disclaimers on some of its classics.
Disney has recognized the negative stereotypes in The Jungle Book, The Aristocats, Lady, and the Tramp, Peter Pan, Swiss Family Robinson, and other programming. In addition, Disney has decided not to bring the movie “Song of the South” to the platform as it seemingly romanticizes slavery. The previous disclaimer that appeared before films stated “outdated cultural depictions.”
In their new disclaimer, Disney goes into more depth, stating: “This program includes negative depictions and mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it, and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together. Disney is committed to creating stories with inspiration and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience worldwide.”
The company’s Stories Matter initiative is focusing on creating more inclusive content. According to their website, “Stories shape how we see ourselves and everyone around us. So as storytellers, we have the power and responsibility to not only uplift and inspire, but also consciously, purposefully, and relentlessly champion the spectrum of voices and perspectives in our world.”
