Trump’s Message To Undocumented Immigrants In The U.S.
On Friday, May 9, Trump signed a new executive order focused on those staying illegally in the U.S. The President has now introduced Project Homecoming, which is described as a self-deportation program aimed at changing immigration policy. The program, per the New York Post, will PAY undocumented immigrants to leave, without the interference of ICE, by offering a $1,000 “exit bonus” and free flights to their chosen destination.
“This is about making it simple for illegal aliens to leave,” Trump stated in a clip shared via Truth Social. He claimed the program would cost far less than forced deportations, totaling around $17,000 per person, according to the DHS official website. This change could save “trillions” by reducing the undocumented population, Trump added.

He also hinted that voluntary departures might even improve chances for legal re-entry, but he made sure to re-emphasize his goal. “We want you out of America,” he said.
How The Self-Deportation Program Works
The program operates through a Department of Homeland Security app, where users submit personal details such as their citizenship and destination, along with a selfie. Additionally, they can schedule departure dates and request financial assistance, including flight coverage.
While details are still being worked out, Trump is making it clear that this incentive will be cheaper for the government. Most importantly, though, it will offer undocumented immigrants assistance in making it home safely.
“We are making it as easy as possible for illegal aliens to leave America,” Trump said in his video message. “Any illegal alien can simply show up at an airport and receive a free flight out of our country.”
Furthermore, Trump says those who leave nicely might even have a shot at coming back legally later on. But he made it clear that his current intent is to get as many illegal immigrants out of the U.S, a move he’s been determined about since re-entering office. “Eventually, when the illegals are gone, it will save us trillions of dollars,” he added.
Senator Slams The Department Of Homeland Security’s Spending
Senator Chris Murphy was not holding back when he voiced his thoughts on the matter during a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing on Thursday, May 8. He criticized the DHS for how it’s handling its budget for the year 2026 and accused the department of being “out of control” with its spending. The New Yorker specifically called out Trump’s deportation campaign, saying, “You are spending as if you don’t have a budget. You are on the verge of running out of money for the fiscal year.”
