While signing the PPP Flexibility Act on Friday, Donald Trump bragged about the unemployment rate and had the unmitigated gall to state that George Floyd, a Black man who died while in police custody, would be happy about it.
While rambling, he went from the unemployment rate to mentioning police brutality and how what happened last week couldn’t happen again.
“We all saw what happened last week. We can’t let that happen.”
Then, he went on to say he hopes “George is looking down and saying this is a great thing that’s happening for our country,” adding, “(It’s) a great day for him. It’s a great day for everybody.”
He said this as he addressed some reporters during a White House Rose Garden event before signing a piece of legislation devoted to small business loan flexibility. “This is a great, great day in terms of equality,” Trump added.
Donnie’s comments about George Floyd and the unemployment rate were met with unprepared remarks, in which he devoted a significant portion to praising the job law enforcement was doing to quell demonstrators, and urging some states to activate the National Guard, according to CNN.
In addition, Donnie stated that “equal justice under the law must mean that every American receives equal treatment in every encounter with law enforcement regardless of race, color, gender or creed. They have to receive fair treatment from law enforcement.”
When he sat down to sign the bill, Donnie was asked why he has not presented a plan to address systemic racism, he shooed the reporter and said, “You’re something else.” That same reporter also asked, “How is it a victory?” when Black unemployment only went up 0.1% and Asian unemployment went up 0.5%.
