On Monday, #Donnie shared that he is taking a malaria drug to lessen symptoms just in case he gets the coronavirus, even though the drug has not been approved to fight COVID-19, according to @FoxLA. He started taking hydrocychloroquine “a couple of weeks ago,”in addition to a zinc supplement.
Trump also shares that his doctor did not recommend the drug to him, the White House physician gave it to him. Despite many of his administration’s top medical professionals advising against the drug, he says it’s “good.”
“I started taking it, because I think it’s good,” Trump said. “I’ve heard a lot of good stories. All I can tell you is, so far I seem to be OK,” he added.
The drug has the potential to cause significant side effects in some patients and has not been shown to combat the new coronavirus, according to Fox LA.
Early on, Trump suggested the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine with or without the antibiotic azithromycin should be used, even though no in-depth studies have found them safe or effective, when treating COVID-19.
As a matter of fact, The Food and Drug Administration has warned against it and emphasized hydroxychloroquine should only be used for formal studies.
To further support the FDA’s claims, two large studies have been conducted with about 1,400 patients. It was found that there was no benefit when using hydroxychloroquine. Two more studies published in the journal BMJ reached the same conclusion, also according to Fox LA.
