Following the confirmation, Dr. Rachel Levine has made history as the first openly transgender woman to be a confirmed federal official.
President Joe Biden promised during his 2020 presidential campaign that he would ensure that he filled his cabinet with diversity in various forms—and he has definitely made good on that so far. With the recent announcement that Dr. Rachel Levine has been confirmed from the Department of Health and Human Services by the Senate, as the new Assistant Health Secretary, history has been made.
Dr. Levine is now the first openly transgender woman in American history to be a confirmed federal official. She previously served as Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Health and is set to serve under Xavier Beccerra. Her appointment was confirmed in an official Senate vote of 52-48.
Speaking about the historical news, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer had this to say about Dr. Levine:
“The Biden administration has brought many historic firsts, including the first openly gay cabinet secretary in the agency. The confirmation of Rachel Levine represents another important milestone for the American LGBTQ community.”
Back in January when he initially appointed her, President Biden said of his decision, “Dr. Rachel Levine will bring the steady leadership and essential expertise we need to get people through this pandemic — no matter their zip code, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability — and meet the public health needs of our country in this critical moment and beyond.”
