Dwyane Wade Opens up About Parenting & Sparking Change Through The Lessons He Has Learned

We have all watched Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union be supportive parents to all of their children. Most recently we have seen them be open about Zaya Wade’s transition and the support and love that they have been providing for her as she continues to learn and grow.

Recently, Dwayne Wade was a guest on the I Am Athlete Podcast, where he sat down and talked to Brandon Marshall, Fred Taylor, Channing Crowder, and Ryan Clark. The fellas covered all of the bases, including sports talk, family life, and even parenting.

During their discussion, Dwyane was transparent about his child’s transition, and what that entailed when it came to his parenting. He said, “People don’t want to hear this sh*t and don’t believe this sh*t, at 3-years-old, me and my wife looked at each other and said, ‘what if?’ What if, at the time, the name was Zion, comes home one day and says, ‘Dad I’m gay, or dad I’m this, I’m that,’ what are you going to do sir?”

He continued to explain that from that age he began to prepare himself. However, it wasn’t until five years later, at the age of eight, Zaya expressed herself. Dwyane continued to talk about how, at that time, Zaya, had a school assignment where the students were describing themselves, and that is when his child opened up about being gay. From that point on, Dwyane said he and his family educated themselves to learn more and instilled a level of comfort, to where last year, they were about to share that their child came out as a transgendered child, who we now know as Zaya Wade.

Dwyane also spoke about his eldest child Zaire and also learning and accepting that he would travel his own road when it comes to his own basketball career.

He also briefly addressed a few critics, including Boosie and J. Boog who have commented about his parenting and thanked them because it has caused conversations that are leading to more people becoming educated.
