It looks like Ellen DeGeneres will be bringing an end to her talk show after its upcoming season, which will be its 19th season, airing in 2022. The show is currently in its 18th season. She delivered the news to her staff yesterday (May 11th) and she’ll speak about the decision with Oprah Winfrey on an upcoming episode.
She spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and said, “When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged, and as great as this show is, and as fun, as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore. ”
Warner Bros.’ Unscripted TV President Mike Darnell said, “Although all good things must come to an end, you still have hope that truly great things never will.” He continued to call Ellen’s talk show an “absolute phenomenon,” after all of the years the show has spent on-air.
It was noted that in the past, Ellen has been open about the dilemmas she’s faced when it came to continuing the show as her wife had encouraged her to move on, while executives at Warner Bros. encouraged her to continue on with the show. Ultimately, she signed on for an additional three seasons but said that her current contract would be her final one.
Once the show comes to an end, she would have completed thousands of episodes.
As previously reported, last summer the Ellen DeGeneres Show was accused of having a toxic workplace environment. Ellen later addressed the accusations during the premiere of the 18th season, and said, “As you may have heard, this summer there were allegations of a toxic work environment at our show and then there was an investigation. I learned that things happened here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously and I want to say I am so sorry to the people that were affected. I know that I am in a position of privilege and power and with that comes responsibility and I take responsibility for what happens at my show.”
