On Monday, Eminem celebrated a huge milestone and he shared the moment with fans through social media.
He took to his Instagram to show off his pin as he celebrated 12 years of being sober. The pin consists of an uplifting message, “one day at a time,” and also says “unity,” “service,” and “recovery,” which are AA’s three legacies, according to Billboard.
In the post, Eminem captioned the photo of the pin and said, “Clean dozen, in the books! I’m not afraid.”
Eminem has not been a stranger to sharing his struggles within his music, and his past drug addiction is no different. With album titles such as “Relapse,” “Recovery,” and “Revival,” he has been open with his listeners as he reached his current milestone.
Back in 2015, he talked to Men’s Journal about his previous addiction as he detailed the weight he had gained at a certain point.
He said, “In 2007, I overdosed on pills, and I went into the hospital. I was close to 230 pounds. I’m not sure how I got so big, but I have ideas. The coating on the Vicodin and the Valium I’d been taking for years leaves a hole in your stomach, so to avoid a stomachache, I was constantly eating — and eating badly.”
Eminem also talked about excessively running during that time as well.
“I got an addict’s brain, and when it came to running, I think I got a little carried away I became a f—ing hamster. Seventeen miles a day on a treadmill. I would get up in the morning, and before I went to the studio, I would run eight and a half miles in about an hour. Then I’d come home and run another eight and a half.”
Eminem also received support from his longtime friend and fellow rapper Royce Da 5’9, who shared a photo of Eminem who held up one of his sobriety pins, and he placed the number 12 on the photo to commemorate that this year makes 12 years since he’s been sober, and said, “And counting…proud of you my brother.”
