Eminem Sets Record For Most Gold And Platinum Certified Singles By An Artist In RIAA History

Eminem added a major accomplishment to his place in the music game on Tuesday. He’s leading RIAA history. The RIAA announced “73.5 million new Gold & Platinum Program certifications” for the artist. These certifications make Eminem the most awarded artist in the singles category. He also joined six other musicians in any genre or era to have more than three Diamond Album Awards.

“These awards recognize Eminem’s unflinching commitment to his craft and the enduring connection he has forged with fans over the last twenty years,” the RIAA CEO & Chairman Mitch Glazier said.

Super Bowl Performance

His new slice of history comes just under a month after his Super Bowl halftime performance. At the time, Eminem made headlines for appearing to take a knee during the performance–now a symbol of protest popularized by Colin Kaepernick on NFL team fields. However, per the ‘New York Post,’ the NFL denied talks about any disputes with the rapper before the show.

The 15-minute show also featured Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige and surprise guest 50 Cent. The NFL’s annual segment was back in headlines recently when Snoop Dogg revealed that Jay-Z instructed the NFL to let performers stick to their brands or he’s out of their partnership.

With these new certifications, the RIAA says Eminem cemented his place as “one of the most accomplished artists in history.” His total RIAA Awards now sits at 227.5 million. Up to this point, Eminem has received 166 million single certifications and 61.5 million album certifications.

As you may already know, artists and appropriate reps must apply for the certifications as they’re not automatically updated. The RIAA began counting digital sales in 2004 and added on-demand streams to their count in 2013.

Among his hefty list of wins is an Academy Award for the song ‘Lose Yourself,’ featured in the film ‘8 Mile.’ According to ‘Deadline,’ the song was the first hip-hop track to secure an Oscar.
