Officials Urge Calm As Cruise Outbreak Sparks Online Chaos
According to reports, health officials confirmed at least three deaths and several infections among passengers aboard the luxury cruise after the vessel became stranded off the coast of Cabo Verde. The ship, which departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, traveled through remote regions, including Antarctica. It is now headed toward the Canary Islands as investigators work to determine how the virus made its way on board. In case you didn’t know, the illness is linked to rodent exposure, and in this case, possibly a strain known as the Andes virus.
Experts, however, are pushing back hard on the online panic. Despite the headlines, infectious disease specialists say this is not like COVID-19. Officials also pointed out that hantavirus does not spread easily in the general population and typically requires very close contact or specific exposure routes. Even in the rare case of person-to-person transmission, health officials say the overall public risk remains extremely low and contained.
