Inspo Behind The Mary J. Blige Mural

The mural ‘Together’ features a rose growing from concrete. A poem by Tupac Shakur inspired the metaphor mural.

The artwork is meant to uplift the community and inspire children to see greatness. Furthermore, the art acknowledges that life may be challenging, but good can arise. It also serves as an example of New York’s mission to use art to inspire and educate citizens.

Ray Wilcox, the Executive Director for Yonker’s Art INC., and Mayor Mike Spano reportedly attended the unveiling. Wilox thanked those who helped the project come to life. Robin Alcantara, the artist, was also recognized.

With the completion of ‘Together,’ Yonkers Housing Authority continues to make headway in its public art initiative. The mural is in connection with a massive $2 million public art project to incorporate art in public spaces.

“There are great people that come out of our public housing sites…” the City Council President, Lakisha Collins-Bellamy, stated in reference to DMX and MJB.

Mayor Spano Speaks

Meanwhile, the mayor shared that the mural creates a sense of pride and possibility within the community.

He said, “We need to have the Arts if we want to be able to really give our kids not just more of an education but to give them that flare…”

In addition, Mayor Spano believes it will give youth “that extra bit of creativity that comes with music and art.”

“It’s a beautiful day,” Spano said.

Mary J. Blige didn’t attend the unveiling, but Mayor Spano hoped she would visit soon. Additionally, he honored Alcantara with a proclamation declaring a day in his honor. The mayor recognized him for his “wonderful work.”

The city firmly believes a little paint can have a significant impact.
