Issa Rae’s Speech At The Women In Film Gala Was Errrr-Thang!

A lot of us have watched #IssaRae and grown with her. For many of us, Issa’s #YouTube series “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl” was the introduction to her genius and we’ve been rooting for her every step of the way.

It brought many of us joy to see her hard work land her a show on #HBO and now it seems like everyone we know watches her hit series #Insecure. Her journey has been an inspiring one to watch and recently she was honored at the Women in Film gala with the inaugural Emerging Entrepreneur award.

Issa’s acceptance speech was anything but “humble” and rightfully so because as she explains, “as women we tend to downplay ourselves. We tend to dim our light and we’re kind of conditioned socially to be humble.”

Issa, growing up; in the age of hip hop, drew inspiration from her favorite rappers to write her speech, which she says is the opposite of what she would normally say,

“I decided to embrace this moment in honor of them,” Issa said.

Then hilarity and Black Girl Magic ensued. You can watch the speech below.
