On Monday, a large crowd of people gathered in the south L.A. after a man was fatally shot by deputies. Footage captured by bystanders started to make its rounds, as it showed moments before the man was shot.
According to CBS Los Angeles, the man has been identified as 29-year-old Dijon Kizzee. In the moments before the shooting, he could be seen running from the deputies before being shot. After the shooting, the deputies could be seen trying to provide the man with aid.
Lt. Brandon Dean spoke about the shooting during a press conference and said, “Our suspect was holding some items of clothing in his hands, punched one of the officers in the face, and then dropped the items in his hands. The deputies noticed that inside the clothing items that he dropped was a black semiautomatic handgun, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred.”
The incident took place around 3:15 p.m. near West 109th Place and Budlong Avenue after deputies attempted to stop Kizzee, who was riding his bike, for a vehicle code violation. Authorities say that is when he took off running.
Investigators claim that a handgun was recovered from the scene of the shooting. However, they could not how many times or where the man had been shot.
A small crowd of people gathered at the scene, but the crowd eventually grew to at least 100 people.
On Tuesday, the news station reported that hundreds of people were gathered at the Sheriff’s Office Tuesday morning.
