As folks continue to wait on updates about Brittney Griner’s recent arrest, WNBA legend Lisa Leslie is speaking out, and what she says may be a shocker to some. During an upcoming episode of ‘I Am Athlete, ‘ Lisa claims she and other WNBA players were advised not to make a “big fuss” about the situation. “What we were told, and again this is all sort of passed along through hearsay, but what we were told was not to make a big fuss about it,” she said. “So that they could not use her as a pawn, so to speak, in this situation in the war. So, to make it like it’s not that important or don’t make it where we’re like, ‘Free Brittney’ and we start this campaign, and then it becomes something that they can use.”
Lisa continued explaining how she talks about Brittney’s arrest with NBA all-star Dawn Staley and other people she’s close with daily. “We’re just like ‘Dang, what’s she doing now? Do you think they cut off her hair? Does she have a bed long enough to fit in?'” Lisa didn’t reveal who the source was and whether she knew who initially shared the information, it didn’t prevent her from speaking on the situation.
Many people have voiced their opinion about Brittney’s arrest, including Syracuse University’s associate professor of journalism Aileen Gallagher. According to NPR, Aileen stated, “It is absurd this isn’t a huge story” dominating the airwaves as well as the front pages of America’s largest newspapers.” She added, “It is a clear domestic connection to the biggest story in the world right now that also involves an athlete who is considered one of the best to ever play the game.”
